Designed and developed by Grumman, the TBM Avenger torpedo bomber on display in YORKTOWN's hangar deck was built by the General Motors Company in fall of 1942.
Early Avenger's went into Navy service in time for the June 1942 Battle of Midway. The Avenger played a pivotal role in the Pacific because of its effectiveness against
the Japanese fleet and its rugged resistance to enemy fire. Avenger's three man crew included a pilot, a rear gunner in a powered turret and a bombardier/ gunner in the plane's belly.
An Avenger assembly line in Tarrytown, New York may have propelled to fame a real life "Rosie the Riveter". After the fictional "Rosie" appeared on a Saturday Evening Post
cover in May, 1943 a newspaper photographer discovered Rose Hicker. She was pictured driving a record number of rivets into an Avenger wing. The "real Rosie" became a media sensation
