In this new, 60 minute Space program, Journey to Planet X, students are transformed into astronauts and will explore the universe like never before. Using 360-degree virtual reality optic technology, astronauts navigate the galaxy in a custom transporter on a mission to Planet X.
Length: One hourRequirements:
In this exclusive 90 minute space program, groups will get a chance to experience our new VR Space Mission AND participate in a private stargazing session on the Yorktown’s flight deck with astrophysicist Kevin Gainey. Students will learn about the search for life in our solar system and the planets and moons where astronomers think it might exist. In doing so, they will also learn about the chemistry, geology, and characteristics of many solar system bodies. Students will view stars, constellations, planets, and the Moon and learn how these objects move through the night sky.
Due to the nature of this program, it is available for campers ONLY, with a maximum of 25 participants. Stargazing on the flight deck is weather permitting, but we will have a backup option available.
Kevin Gainey is a former Marine and Eagle Scout who graduated from the College of Charleston with a BS in Astrophysics and a minor in Biology. He has been interested in space ever since he was a little kid and is especially interested in the search for life. During his studies, his research team discovered the exoplanet kap And b. He has two daughters that he constantly shares science facts with and two dogs who care nothing about science! His hobbies include kayaking, gardening and exercising.
