Flight 93 Co-pilot’s Wife to Speak at 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Holly Jackson Sep 03, 2013

MelodieMelodie Homer, wife of United Airlines Flight 93 co-pilot LeRoy Homer, will be the guest speaker at Patriots Point’s 9-11 remembrance ceremony September 6th.  Flight 93 had 33 passengers and seven crew members on board, all who died as a result of the hijacking and crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania September 11, 2001. The commission that investigated the 9/11 attacks determined that passengers fought back against the hijackers to prevent the jet from reaching the intended target, The United States Capitol. The ceremony will take place Friday, September 6th at 10 am in the Yorktown theatre.

Melodie Homer has authored a book titled, “From Where I Stand,” which chronicles the events of that day and the new normal she’s come to know since losing her husband to the attacks.

“Twelve years later and the pain and hurt from that terrible day is still deep for America; but nobody feels it like those who lost husbands, wives, children, grandchildren and those they love most,” Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette said.  “Melodie Homer offers assurance that through grief we can still persevere.”

Following Homer’s remarks, a panel discussion will take place on the changes in safety in airports and air since September 11, 2001.  Members of the panel are:

  • Jim Peacher:  Manager of Airport Security, Charleston County Aviation Authority
  • Bill New: Deputy Director, Charleston County Aviation Authority
  • Melodie Homer:  wife of United Airlines Flight 93 co-pilot LeRoy Homer

The ceremony will conclude with a wreath-laying on Charleston Harbor.  Admission to the museum will be free from 9:30-10:30 am.  The $5 parking fee still applies.
