Rock Hill Safety Patrol Students Visit Patriots Point

130610_RockHillSafetyPatrol_copyPatriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was pleased to welcome 170 fifth grade students from Rock Hill District III for a special overnight camping visit this week.  The Rock Hill Police Department sponsored the students, all fifth grade students and members of their schools’ Safety Patrol, as an end of the year reward for their participation in the program.

During their visit to Patriots Point, the students ‘walked in the steps of heroes’ and toured the museum’s fleet of historic Navy ships, including the USS Yorktown (CV-10) aircraft carrier, USS Laffey (DD-724) destroyer, and the USS Clamagore (SS-343) submarine. In addition, the students participated in Oceanography education programs hosted by the Patriots Point Institute of History, Science and Technology. As part of this program, students participated in hands-on that focused on the USS Yorktown’s surrounding estuarine environment.  They studied the plant and animal organisms in the marsh water, tested the salinity of water samples at the Patriots Point outdoor research center, and learned about the effects of water on landmass formations.

“We were pleased to welcome the Rock Hill Safety Patrol participants to Patriots Point for an overnight stay aboard the USS Yorktown,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “I hope the students, all leaders at their schools, enjoyed their visit and left with a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, our nation’s military.”
