Auction to Provide Scholarships for Patriots Point Institute of History & Science
It’s the hottest ticket in town and members of the public now have a special opportunity to get in on the action. For a limited time, the USS Yorktown (CV-10) Association will host an online auction for two sets of PGA Championship Wanamaker Club Passes. Bidding will take place July 20-27 on eBay. Proceeds of the auction will fund scholarships for the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science.
The Wanamaker Club Ticket Package provides access to the Championship Grounds and Wanamaker Club all seven (7) days of the Championship. The Wanamaker Club is a sports-bar-themed pavilion with air-conditioning, HD televisions, upscale food & beverage options (available for purchase), Each Wanamaker Club Ticket Package comes in the form of seven (7) individual daily tickets (one for Monday, one for Tuesday, etc.).
The auction was made possible by generous donation from the PGA Tour following the use of the USS YORKTOWN for a media event to promote the PGA Championship. During the event, 2011 champion Keegan Bradley teed off from the flight deck and was successful in hitting a target in the Charleston Harbor, earning all attendees a free ticket to a practice round of the tournament.
“The PGA Championship at Kiawah will shine a spotlight on Charleston from a national and international perspective and we were thrilled to host Keegan and the PGA for such a unique event aboard the YORKTOWN in March,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “Moreover, thanks to the generosity of the PGA, and support of the Yorktown Association, we will be able to provide scholarships that will allow students to participate in standards-based educational programs offered by the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science.”
The Patriots Point Scholarship Program depends on support from the community and organizations such as the Yorktown Association. Qualifying schools and programs are eligible to apply for funding; and every $10 donation means that a student is able to participate in the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science’s education programs. During the past school year, Patriots Point welcomed students from 26 counties in South Carolina and provided scholarships for more than 5,000 students to participate in the Institute of History and Science education programs.
“The Yorktown Association is proud to support the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science,” said Todd Cummins, Executive Director of the USS Yorktown (CV-10) Association. “Through their participation in these educational programs, students gain a greater understanding of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served our armed forces as well as a foundation in science, literacy and mathematics.”
