Arthur not slowing down 75 young people participating in deCycles 2014

Chris Hauff Jul 03, 2014

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Hurricane Arthur is just a small bump on a long road for 75 young men and women who are biking across seven states in just three weeks.  On Saturday, June 21 the group of bicycle riders participating in deCycles 2014 took off from Key West, Florida, bound for Bloomington, Indiana.

“The focus of the trek is to serve as a youth development program with focus on three areas,” said deCycles director Norm Houze.   “They look to build the youth mentally, physically and spiritually.”

The cyclists travel in groups of six on roads with the best combination of riding surfaces, facilities and scenery.   They have 13 stops planned along their journey including overnight stays in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana.

On Wednesday, deCycles pulled into their halfway mark, the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  After locking up their gear, they spent the night on board the USS YORKTOWN where the group toured the historic warship and enjoyed the views of Charleston’s harbor from the aircraft carrier’s flight deck.

Thursday morning it was back on the bikes.  The cyclists will spend the day pedaling to their way to Columbia, S.C.

To qualify for the annual deCycles ride you must be between the ages of 13-22 and a full time student.
