Lowcountry residents and visitors to Charleston are abuzz with excitement for the Fourth of July Blast at Patriots Point. With two weeks remaining until this annual celebration, Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette has announced that Flight Deck tickets are officially sold out.

Although tickets to the Flight Deck are sold out, there is still plenty of seating left landside and admission to this area is free, as it has always been. A $10 per vehicle parking fee will be assessed for all who wish to park at Patriots Point.

“Patriots Point has come to be recognized as the Lowcountry destination for the Fourth of July,” Burdette stated.  “We are proud to welcome more than 25,000 people each year to celebrate Independence Day at Patriots Point; and this year, we’re excited to host 1,000 guests on our Flight Deck for the first time.”

In addition to an exciting new viewing platform – one of the nation’s most historic war ships – this year’s celebration will feature 8-inch firework shells shot from a barge in the Cooper River, making Patriots Point’s fireworks display the most spectacular in the State of South Carolina.

Guests on the Flight Deck will enjoy special access to the USS YORKTOWN starting at 5:30 p.m., with catered food and beverage available for purchase. The YORKTOWN will have entertainment for everyone – with live music from the East Coast Party Band and the up-and-coming group, The Explorers Club kicking-off at 6:00 p.m. and jump castles available for kids.

For those who wish to remain landside, fireworks will be visible from the grounds. Food and beverage from local vendors will be available for purchase and there will be lots of entertainment for the kids.

  1. If we are planning on sitting Landside on the 4th ~ what time should we be arriving so we don’t get jammed in traffic?
Do you need to buy parking passes before the 4th to sit landside?

    • Ms. Gingrich,

We recommend arriving between 6 and 6:30 to park and find a spot to sit landside. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that there won’t be traffic at this time; but we typically have a rush around 7 pm. Parking passes are $10/vehicle, but there is no admission fee to sit landside. Thank you!

  2. Are there any tickets left for viewing fireworks from the USS Yorktown and if so, where do you buy them.
    Thank you

    • Unfortunately, our Flight Deck tickets are sold out. There will be plenty of room landside, as well as food vendors and games for kids!

  3. We are visiting Charleston next week for the first time . Is there a trolley or shuttle to take you to the fireworks display . We are staying downtown . Are there river cruises to see fireworks and what is the cost .Thanks Connie-Sue

    • Good afternoon Connie-Sue,

I’m afraid I am not terribly familiar with shuttles from downtown. Your best source of information would be the concierge at your hotel. They have a lot of great information about transportation opportunities available as well as the pricing for each. Thank you, and Happy Fourth of July!

      • At the July 4th celebration, are we allowed to bring our own food and drink on to the ship or must we purchase what food is there? Should we bring lawn chairs to sit on or blankets or will seating be provided?

        • Hi Larry,

No personal food and beverage will be allowed aboard the Yorktown; but there will be plenty of food available to purchase. We would strongly recommend bringing lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. We’ll have some chairs available, but it will be limited (as we don’t have enough for everyone). Thank you!

  4. If we come early to tour the York, can we stay to watch the fireworks, without having to leave and re-enter?
    When does parking open?
When does the water taxi start service to Charleston?

    • Hi Neal,

Do you have tickets to watch the fireworks from the flight deck? If so, that will open to ticketholders at 5:30 p.m. and you are welcome to tour the ship at that time. You will be given a wrist band, so you will not need to leave and re-enter. Parking will open when the museum opens at 9 that morning. I’m afraid I don’t know much in the way of specifics regarding the Water Taxi, so you may want to contact their company directly. Thank you!

  5. For the Landside seating can we bring coolers, chairs and blankets? I would like to bring our own snacks and bottled water if possible since it will be so hot.

    • Absolutely! We recommend bringing chairs and blankets and you are welcome to bring a cooler with snacks and bottled water. Thank you.

  6. How would we get to Patriots Point from Summerville SC? And how early can we arrive at Patriots Point to park. And one more question, please….Should we bring chairs, will there be room to sit? Thank you, have a happy 4th.

    • Hello Shawne,

If you’re using a mapquest-type program, our address is 40 Patriots Point Road; Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. You can arrive as early as you’d like that day; but most of the festivities will not begin until 5 p.m. or so. We would definitely recommend bringing chairs, and there will be plenty of room. Thank you, and Happy Fourth of July to you, too!

  7. We will celebrate the 4th 2012 on the Yorktown, unfortunately will be unable to attend the fireworks. I collect flags flown over navy ships, can I purchase one flown over the York on the 4th?
    Thanks.

    • Good afternoon,

Unfortunately, our staff will all be working on other duties on the fourth; but we will be glad to work with you to make arrangements for another day.

  8. Happy Pre Fourth of July,

We three have been invited to join family at a VIP Table on the Yorktown. One of us is 80 and I would like to be sure there are chairs, shade, refreshements and restroom facilities available before we can accept. I was already informed there is an elevator. What does a VIP Table include?

    • Good afternoon,

There will be chairs and tables available in the VIP section, but there will be no shade covering. We’ll have plenty of food and beverage available for purchase on the flight deck as well as restroom facilities. Thank you!

  9. We have a 3-year-old attending the event with us and have concerns about keeping her in the sun for too long. Can we bring a quick-up canopy shelter?

    • Good afternoon Ms. Reeves,

Tents are welcome on the landside of Patriots Point – they just have to be taken down by 8 pm in advance of the fireworks display. Thank you!

    • Hi Jamie,

We plan to have an ATM machine present on the flight deck tomorrow; but we recommend bringing cash – just in case.

  10. Hi,
We are visiting from out of state, and bought tickets to be on the flight deck tonight. If we arrive at 6:30,will we be able to tour the ship before the fireworks show? To purchase dinner, are credit cards accepted?

    Thanks

    • Good afternoon Mike,

Yes, the ship will be open for touring until 8 pm. I do not believe there will be any machines capable of running a credit card (although we may have an ATM machine available on the flight deck). To be safe, we would recommend bringing cash this evening.

  11. Do you know of a hotel close enough with a view of the awesome display of independence day fireworks? We have a special needs infant with a trach and we have medical equipment that we travel with. We would gladly still purchase tickets and enjoy the fireworks from our room. Any assistance with this would be more than appreciated. We are new to charleston and live in Berkley county.

    • Hi John,

The Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina is located adjacent to Patriots Point; but I am not aware of what their view might be. You may wish to contact their concierge to inquire regarding viewing opportunities from their property. They may also have a recommendation for another hotel nearby that might work as well. Thank you, and Happy Fourth of July!

    • Hi Stephanie,

We will have a video game trailer for the kids (free of charge) and there will be a climbing wall that they can purchase tickets to enjoy. Thank you!

    • Gregg,

I do not believe you will be able to see the bands, as they are performing on the other side of the USS Yorktown’s super structure. Thank you.

  12. What activities will there be landslide for adults we are from New Zealand and this will be our grist fourth of July

    • We will have radio stations playing music on the landside as well as food and beverages available for purchase. Enjoy your first Fourth of July!

    • With the sunset scheduled for approximately 8:30, we expect the fireworks will begin just after 9 pm. Thank you.

    • The fireworks will begin once it is dark outside, we anticipate this will be at about 9 pm. Thank you.

  13. What a huge disappointment. I got to Patriot’s Point at 4:30, thinking I’d get an excellent seat. I’m 8 months pregnant and I had to sit in the scorching sun for almost 5 hours. When the fireworks started, I realised I had the worst seat – a tall row of trees blocked the majority of my view. Patriot’s Point made a killing, charging $10 a car but never bothered to warn people about poor places to view the fireworks. It was so sad to watch families pack up and move once the show started because they couldn’t see anything. A park official told me to be sure to lower my tent at 8 pm. He told me this at 5. It would have been fabulous if he had told me to move to a better location. Perhaps the location I was sitting in should be roped off in the future so people won’t sit there. OR cut down the darn trees. My 5 year old asked if she could watch a movie on my phone because she was bored. I will NOT sit at Patriot’s Point ever again.

  14. I attended the fireworks display and was somewhat disappointed by the placement of the display. The majority of the fireworks were behind the trees so only the high explosions were visible above the tree line. There were several complaints from others on the placement of the fireworks. The only people who had a good view were the people on the ship. Recommend next year at least some signs pointing to where the fireworks are going to be shot from for us out of town visitors so that we can sit somewhere that they aren’t obscured by the trees or change the location to portside of the ship for more visibility.

    Visitor James

  15. Those of us who were at the park but not on the flight deck couldn’t see the fireworks because of the trees. Many people left right after the fireworks began!!! Please fix this for next year – it was very disappointing…

  16. July 4, 2012 on the Yorktown flight deck was absolutely the best 4th of July celebration of our lives! Thank you!!!
