Patriots Point - Home of the USS Yorktown.<br /><br />
2012 4th of July BlastWe are looking forward to celebrating the Fourth of July at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum – home to some of the nation’s most historic war ships.  Along with the most spectacular fireworks display in the Lowcountry, we will be offering two different viewing areas – the Flight Deck  of the USS Yorktown (tickets required) and the landside of the museum (free for the public).

Please see below for important information about this celebration that will be helpful as you plan your visit:

• Parking is $10/vehicle.

• Guests who have tickets to the flight deck will be granted access starting at 6 p.m.  (Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 11 and under)  There is no outside food/beverage permitted on the flight deck. Seating will not be provided and we recommend bringing your own lawn chair.  Live music will begin at approximately 6 p.m.

• For the landside celebration, live music will kick off at 5 p.m. with kids activities beginning at 4 p.m. (As always, it is free to watch the fireworks from the landside of the museum)

• The fireworks will be shot from a barge in the Cooper River once again this year.  We have taken extra measures to ensure the barge is located in an area that will provide the highest visibility for our guests.  In addition, we will be placing signs on landside areas were viewing may be limited.

• We love animals; but NO pets are permitted at Patriots Point for the Fourth of July Blast.

• We will have vendors available to purchase food/drink on both the flight deck and landside.  ATMs will be available on property.

• The USS Yorktown will be open for the public to tour from 9 – 5:00 p.m.  The last ticket will be sold at the Ticket Office at 4 p.m. Adult tickets (12+) are $18, child tickets (6-11) are $11 and children 6 and under are free.

• The sunset is scheduled to take place at 8:32 p.m.  The fireworks will begin once it is dark outside, and we expect this will be at approximately 9 p.m.

    • Hi Jess,

We are not encouraging alcohol or coolers to be brought to our Fourth of July celebration; but they are permitted on the landside area. Thank you

  1. I have tickets for the Fourth of July event. Do I need to purchase additional tickets to tour the carrier or will we have time/access if we arrive at 6pm with our July 4th event tickets?

    • The USS Yorktown will be available for tours at 6 p.m. but our other ships, the USS Laffey and the USS Clamagore will not be open at that time. We typically say a tour of the Yorktown lasts about 2.5 hours, so your timing would likely depend on how much/how little you want to see of the ship or the live music on the Flight Deck that evening. Hope this helps!

      Thank you!

  2. We are purchasing tickets so that we can view the fireworks from the flight deck. I would like to take pictures of the fireworks. What is the policy for bringing a camera and tripod?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  3. Hi.

My wife and I are buying tickets to both tour the boats and to see the firewoks. Our yongest son is 23 months. Will there be a cost for his admission?

    • Hi Tim,

For general admission, all children 6 and under are free.

For the Fourth of July Blast, infants being carried in their parents’ arms or in an infant carrier (they can’t walk on their own) will not require a ticket. All other children 11 and under will need a ticket to attend the Fourth of July celebration on the flight deck. The pricing for this is $10.

      Thank you!

    • Hello Hillary,

We will have a scavenger hunt, jump castle and inflatable slide, plane building activities, animals on display, a smoke house from the Fire Department and a climbing wall for the kids. All activities are free, with the exception of the climbing wall, which will be available for $5/climb.

      Thanks!

      • Oh my goodness, that is wonderful! I now know what we are going to do for Fourth of July!
        Thanks so much for responding!

  4. I am planning on doing a tour of the museum on July 4th and watching the fireworks landside. Am I correct that parking for the entire day will be $8? Or will there be a charge for the day then the 4th event? Also, how long do I need to allow to tour the museum allowing time for all exhibits?

    • Hi Jessica,

Parking will be $10/vehicle on the Fourth of July and it’s good for the entire day. If you’re planning to visit the museum during the day, we recommend allowing at least 2.5 hours to see the ships and exhibits. Please note that we will be closing the ships at 5 p.m. that day, and reopening at 6 p.m. for Flight Deck ticket holders. (A separate ticket is required if you wish to attend the Flight Deck celebration) Thank you!

    • Hi Lisa,

There are a lot of great hotels in the Mount Pleasant/Patriots Point area! I’d recommend searching using “Mount Pleasant” and/or “Patriots Point” for hotels that are located close to our property. Thanks!

  5. If we purchase tickets for the Yorktown deck are we assured (and we will pay) access to parking at Patriot’s Point?

    • Hi Shannon,

All parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. As such, we strongly advise recommend arriving early so you can be assured of a parking spot.

      Thank you!

  6. I understand that the East Coast Party Band will be playing on the flight deck. Will sound systems be set up for them to be heard, adequately, landside?

    • Hi Willard,

Yes, the East Coast Party Band will be playing on the Flight Deck. While they will have a substantial sound system; I do not anticipate it will carry to the landside area, as we’ll have several bands performing on the landside observation area as well.

      Thank you

  7. I would like to purchase tickets, but will have my 86 year old mother with me who has a hard time with steps. Is there handicapped access to the flight deck for watching the fireworks? Thanks

    • Hello Heidi,

We will have handicapped parking available for guests, as well as golf carts that can assist in transporting your Mom down the pier. On the Yorktown, we have an elevator that provides access from the pier level to the flight deck, so she should be all set.

      Thank you.

      • Thanks, that is great. I have one more question. I have tried to forward the email with my tickets to my work email so I can print them out and it won’t go through. How do I print the tickets now?

    • Hi Matthew,

We are treating the Fourth of July Blast as a ‘rain or shine’ event and will do everything possible to host the fireworks display on Thursday night. However, given the weather patterns we’ve experienced recently, there is certainly a possibility that a weather system could require us to cancel all/some elements of the event for the safety of our spectators and staff.

Guests should come prepared for the possibility of rain and/or a thunderstorm. If watching the event from the landside and a significant lightning event occurs, the only safe harbor would be your personal automobile. Flight Deck guests will be directed to the Hangar Bay, which is perfectly safe.

In the event that the fireworks show is cancelled, refunds will not be issued for Flight Deck tickets or parking. Flight deck ticket holders will have the option to visit the museum anytime in the next year free or charge (they’ll just need to bring their ticket).

In our nearly 20 years of hosting this event, we have never been rained out and we don’t intend to start now. It’s going to be a great day at Patriots Point but we’re prepared to take prudent actions as necessary. We look forward to celebrating the Fourth of July with our Lowcountry residents and visitors.

  8. Ok I have what may be a silly question! Do we get to keep the tickets that we printed out? My kids want to keep them after we come, so i was going to have them laminated to keep them nice. Also, can we come and go off the ship to enjoy the other stuff going on on land or go to the car?

    • Hi Matthew,

Our staff will need to stamp the tickets once you enter; but you’ll have no problem keeping them if you wish. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy spending the Fourth of July at Patriots Point!

  9. Hello, I’m a Patriots Point volunteer and I was wondering if free tickets were being made available for the volunteers? Thanks in advance for your time and efforts!

  12. Hi, My family and I are coming down from D.C. and want to purchase tickets for the flight deck . We are military. The site says to purchase at box office, I am afraid tickets will sell out. Is it worth the savings to wait until I get there? Thanks Diana

    • Hi Diana,

First, thank you for your service as a military family. We do offer discounted tickets for active duty military for daily admission. With the Fourth of July Blast being a special event, we do not have any discounted tickets – it’s all general admission. We hope you enjoy celebrating the Fourth at Patriots Point!

  13. Hi:
The “reply” to questions 3 and 9 have me a bit confused. Can you clarify; Can you arrive at 6:00pm, tour the Yorktown (Are parts of the ship closed that would normally be open during the day?) and watch the fireworks from the flight deck? If so, what ticket or tickets need to be purchased.
    Thanks
    Brian

    • Hi Brian,

After 6 p.m., the USS Yorktown will remain open for those with Flight Deck tickets only. (The Laffey and Clamagore will be closed starting at 5 p.m.) Flight Deck ticket holders will have access to tour everything aboard the Yorktown that is open for visitors during the day.

If you wish to tour the USS Laffey and the USS Clamagore, you would need to purchase a regular daily admission ticket. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

      Thank you.

  14. We are new to the area…so I’m unclear if a city bus route is available to reach Patriots Point, do you know?

Also, we are planning to stay landside, not boarding any ships whatsoever at all during the day.

What time do your children’s activities/food vendors start and how much is it for adults and children to attend ONLY the landside events/children’s activities?

    • Hi Lori,

Yes, there is a city bus route that stops at Patriots Point. Here’s the link to information: http://www.ridecarta.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/CARTA-Route-41_Effective-022413.pdf

Our landside activities (children’s activities and food vendors) begin/open at 4 p.m. and live music will start at 5. There is no cost to attend the landside celebration or to participate in the activities (with the exception of the climbing wall, which is $5/climb). Please note that a $10/vehicle parking fee will be assessed for all who visit Patriots Point.

      Thanks!

  15. My husband is active duty in the Navy and will be in uniform on the fourth. We have not bought tickets yet, are there still seats available? What will be the cost for him? I’m his wife, I have a military ID..what will the cost be for me?

    • Hi Chelsea,

First, thank you for your service as a military family! Because it is a special event, we will not be offering discounted tickets to the Flight Deck for the Fourth of July. (We’re almost sold out, so we recommend purchasing today if you’d like to attend) We do offer free daily admission for all active duty military in uniform (as a spouse, you would still need a ticket). Thank you!

  16. When viewing the fireworks landside, where exactly does this take place? How much viewing is possible with having the ships in the bay? Also what restrooms will be available? Thank You so much!!

    • Hi Carole,

We will have designated viewing areas on the landside for the fireworks display. The majority of our guests will be in the grassy areas to the left and right of our gift shop (and adjacent to our parking lot). Ships in the bay (including the USS Yorktown) will not obstruct the fireworks in any way, and we will have areas marked where trees may interfere with your line of sight. We will have restrooms in our gift shop, as well as porta-potties available throughout the Patriots Point grounds.

      Thank you.

  17. Hi, can you purchase tickets the day of the event? and if so, what do you think the chances are in getting 4 tickets (to the flight deck). Thank you, Aura from Toronto, Canada

    • Hi Aura,

We are just about sold out for Flight Deck tickets for the Fourth of July. If you’d like to attend this specific celebration, we recommend purchasing your tickets in advance. If you wish to visit during the day (just to tour the museum), it is no problem to purchase tickets the day of the Fourth. Thanks!

  18. Are only a certain number of tickets sold for flight deck viewing on July 4th? Would our money be refunded if fireworks are cancelled due to weather?

  19. How limited will parking be? How early do you anticipate guests having to arrive in order to get a parking spot? If I wanted to come around 7:30 or 8 should I plan on taking a cab to the event? If parking runs out are there any other areas where we can park in walking distance of the event?

    • Hi Christy,

7:30/8 is typically our busiest time in terms of guests arriving for parking. We will have several adjacent parking lots within walking distance. We do recommend arriving earlier if possible but you shouldn’t have trouble finding a spot. Thanks!

    • Hi Catherine,

We will have parking available in adjacent lots to Patriots Point. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a parking space but we recommend arriving early if possible.

      Thank you!

    • Hi Eric,

8:15 PM East Coast Party Band

    • Hi Pam,

We’re not too sure about the policy for pedestrians on the bridge for the Fourth of July. Your best bet would be to contact the Town of Mount Pleasant to confirm. They can be reached at (843) 884-8517. Thanks!

  20. We always love watching the Patriots Point fireworks show on the 4th from our boat in the harbor but were very disappointed last year that none of the radio stations were playing patriotic music as the fireworks were going off. Will any stations be playing patriotic music this year during the fireworks?

    • Hi Lou Ann,

We will have recorded patriotic music playing aboard the USS Yorktown and landside; but to our knowledge, there will not be any music broadcast on the radio in conjunction with the fireworks show. Thank you!

        • Tickets will go on sale at the end of May through early June. Keep checking back on our site for the availability.

    • Hi Taylor,

      Here’s the landside line up:

      5:00 PM Heartfelt Hinges
6:00 PM Andrew Scotchie and the River Rats
      7:00 PM Headrush
      8:00 PM Stained Glass Wall

  21. My family would like to watch the fireworks from our boat. What are the regulations for boats in the water during the show? Thank you for your time and assistance.

    • Hi Will, Please contact the Coast Guard for information regarding regulations for boats. We hope you enjoy what we know will be a spectacular show tomorrow.

    • Hi Lisa,

Daily admission tickets will be available at our ticket office on the day of the Fourth. We are, unfortunately, sold out of our Flight Deck tickets for that evening, so you won’t be able to purchase those at the window.

      Thank you.

  22. To recap:
The ships will be open as usual on the 4th and its $18/ adult/ under 6 free w/ parking being $10 all day. All ships close at 5p w/ Yorktown re-opening at 6p and another $20/ adult and $10/ child to re-enter plus view fw atop the ship. Landside activities start at 5pm and are free less food/drink and climbing wall. Chairs & coolers allowed.

    • Hi John,

Thank you for your service. For daily admission to our museum, all active duty military in uniform is admitted for free. If you are in civilian attire, admission is $15 with a valid military ID. For the Fourth of July Blast Flight Deck tickets, it’s all general admission, and we do not have a specific military price.

      Thank you!

    • Hi Eric,

We’re all sold out for our Flight Deck tickets; but there’s still plenty of room on the landside.

      Thanks!

  23. Other than the $10 parking for the fireworks, are there any other charges to view the fireworks landside?

    • No, Dustin. The $10 parking fee is all you need to view the fireworks. You do have the option of purchasing food and beverages, however, coolers are permitted. See you tomorrow!

    • Hi Hilarie! We are treating this event as a “rain or shine.” If there is a thunderstorm with lightning activity, the safest place for landside viewers is their car. In this event, flight deck viewers would be moved to the hangar bay. Safety of our visitors is paramount. We are encouraged, though, by the reports of a 20% chance of rain tomorrow. Hope to see you tomorrow!

  24. Will it be okay to get there early,10:00 am and set up a canopy on the grass and hang out for the day? Of course we will take the canopy down when all the activities start. Thanks, Sherry

    • Hi Stephanie!

We’re not too sure about access to the bridge for pedestrians. Your best bet would be to contact the Town of Mount Pleasant. Thanks!

  25. If we purchased tickets, but are unable to attend can we give these tickets to someone else as long as we put their name on the ticket?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Leigh Anne,

We’re sorry you won’t be able to join us; but it’s no problem to give the tickets to someone else if you put their name on the ticket. Thanks!

    • Hi Tom!

We’ll have lots of viewing areas available from the landside. One of the best areas to watch the display is the grassy areas adjacent to the parking lot – to the left and right of the Gift Shop. We will have signs posted in the areas where viewing might be somewhat limited. If you have any questions or concerns when you arrive, be sure to check with a Patriots Point staff member and they’ll be able to provide guidance. Thank you!

  26. When does traffic tend to get heavy? When is the best time to arrive at Patriot’s Point in order to get parking at the site?

    • Hi Boston!

We recommend arriving around 5:30/6 to get parking at Patriots Point. (We can’t guarantee that parking will still be available at this time; but we typically see our biggest rush of spectators between 7 and 8 p.m.) Thanks!

    • Hi there! No grills are allowed but you are welcome to bring a cooler or enjoy food from our vendors. It’s going to be a great night.

    • Hi Tiffany!

No problem! Visit the gift shop when you arrive and ask for Kristina on our staff. She’ll be able to help you.

      Thanks!

  27. Once we have arrived on the flight deck, can we leave to go to the car to get our chairs to watch fireworks and be re-admitted back to the flight deck? Basically, once we are on this ship, can we leave to go to the car and come back?

    • Hi Debbie!

Yes, you will be given a wristband that will grant you access up and down the pier throughout the evening. Thanks!

    • Hi Chris,

We’re treating this as a rain or shine event. There’s a chance the weather may force us to cancel or postpone elements of the event, but we’re prepared to continue as long as it’s safe for our spectators and staff. Thanks!

    • Hi Ian! Wasn’t it worth the wait? What an incredible show. We wanted it to be just right- and it was! Thanks so much for coming out.

  28. We has such a great time exploring the ship at the BLAST that we decided to come back on the 5th and tour the Destroyer, submarine and the rest of the Yorktown. Thanks.

Our only regret is that we did not purchase the souvenir photograph when we left. Is there any way at all to purchase that photograph now? We were there on July 5th.

    Thanks
    Brian
