Okinawa Campaign Begins 1945

Task Force 58 under Admiral Marc Mitscher┬ábegan the campaign against Okinawa with strikes on Kyushu, Japan, beginning on 18 March. The sorties would last four days and destroy over 482 Japanese aircraft on the ground. The USS Yorktown was part of Mitscher’s powerful task force, but soon the Japanese would release their own unique power in the shape of Tokko (special) attacks that we have come to know as kamikazes.

  1. My dad served on the USS Yorktown around 1944 or 1945. Is there a list of soldiers who served on this ship at that time?

    • Dear Ms. Mays,

Thank you for your comment. We have passed along your inquiry to the USS Yorktown Association. They have a list of the sailors who served aboard the ship and should be able to help. Thank you!
