Patriots Point Institute of History and Science to Offer Recertification Program for SC Teachers

patriotspoint Jun 29, 2012

For the first time ever, the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science is offering a special recertification program for South Carolina teachers aboard the USS YORKTOWN. This program, written by educators who have been in the classroom, is designed to inform teachers about multi-faceted programs that are available to assist them in and out of the classroom.  For $20, participants will receive one credit (or CEU), two full days of professional development training, a book with program curriculum, meals, and the option to stay overnight aboard the ship.

“Having served more than 100,000 students and educators, we are excited to take this next step,” said Patriots Point Education Director Keith Grybowski.  “Just as we focus on inspiring and educating students, we aim to help refresh and renew teachers as they prepare for a new school year.”

The Patriots Point Institute of History and Science features standards-based instruction that combines the rich history of Charleston; legacies of service found aboard the USS YORKTOWN, USS LAFFEY and in the Medal of Honor Museum; and the wonders of the Charleston Harbor’s estuarine environment. All together, these elements address 75% of the curricular requirements as set forth in the South Carolina State Standards in the specific areas of history, science, math and literacy (ELA).

The two-day seminar will also feature an educational panel that will explore the latest teaching innovations and technologies from around the state. Panelists include:

–          Darren Provost, Lowcountry Branch, SC STEM Centers SC

–          Gerrita Postlewait, Educational Consultant

–          Linda O’Bryon, President and CEO, ETV

“Part of our mission is to provide tomorrow’s leaders with a foundation in our nation’s proud military history,” said Executive Director Mac Burdette, noting that the Institute of History and Science doesn’t stop there. “Through initiatives such as our Teacher Recertification Program, we are incorporating math, science and literacy in a way that makes learning fun for students and teachers alike.  Moreover, this program has allowed us to expand our reach and share our innovative curriculum with teachers and school districts across the state.”

The Teacher Recertification Program will take place August 8-9 aboard the USS YORKTOWN. In order to earn credit, teachers must attend both days of training. Registration is required by July 16, and payment must be received by check no later than August 1. Visit www.patriotspoint.org to register.
