Town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France visits Patriots Point

Chris Hauff Sep 02, 2014

On Sunday, August 31 onboard the USS YORKTOWN, the mayor of Sainte-Mère-Église, Jean Quétier was presented a key to the Town of Mt. Pleasant by councilman Elton Carrier. Councilman Carrier also issued a proclamation announcing August 31, 2014 as the Town of Sainte-Mère-Église Day.

The French town was the first to be liberated from Nazi Germany in World War II. Since their liberation, they have protected and maintained the grave sites of Americans who died in the invasion. In doing so, they have also personally reached out to thousands of families and sent pictures of the decorated graves back to the United States.

Every year, during the anniversary of D-Day the town hosts families of veterans who travel to Sainte-Mère-Église to remember their loved ones.
