All systems go for launch of the new Apollo 8 Mission Exhibit at Patriots Point

Chris Hauff Jul 16, 2014

The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is taking visitors on a ride to the moon in a all new interactive and immersive Apollo 8 Mission Exhibit.   The immersive capsule experience opened Sunday, July 20th, the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11’s landing on the moon.

While on their2421a 20140716_101421simulated trip into space, guests inside the Apollo 8 capsule hear actual radio communication recorded during the mission.  They are positioned exactly the same way the astronauts were strapped in, and enjoy video of the historic takeoff and views from space.   A state of the art audio system recreates the amazing sound and feel of the launch.

“The Apollo 8 mission was a tremendous step for the Apollo program, and really demonstrates America’s greatness” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette.  “These men were first to orbit the moon.  They paved the way for the Apollo 11’s landing seven months later.  We want this exhibit to be a tribute to their dedication and success.  It is also another step in bringing our museum to life.”

In addition to takeoff and a trip around the moon, the Apollo 8 capsule also simulates what it was like to travel back to Earth. Guests inside the capsule feel and hear a splash as the incredible machine drops into the Pacific Ocean.  They also see rare images taken by NASA as the USS YORKTOWN recovered the awaiting space crew.

The new exhibit is included in the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime museum admission price.  It is located in the USS YORKTOWN’s Hangar Bay 1.
