Author On Stealth Technology and SR-71 Blackbird Speaks At Patriots Point Saturday, 12 March

Waring Hills Mar 09, 2011

This Saturday from 3 to 4 PM in the Smokey Stover theater on the USS Yorktown, noted author Paul Suhler will speak on Stealth Technology and the SR-71 Blackbird.  Special price for event is $5 to come onboard for his talk. No Blackbirds ever landed on YORKTOWN, but there is one on the Intrepid sans tailhook! I’m looking forward to his story…

When the first flights of the U-2 photo reconnaissance plane over the Soviet Union were tracked by air defense radars, the CIA realized that it was only a matter of time before it would be shot down, and thus began a crash program to reduce its radar cross-section (RCS). This effort evolved into a competition to design a follow-on aircraft that would be invisible to radar, which led to the development of the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird. While the efforts were not completely successful, they laid the basis for future developments in stealth aircraft, such as the F-117, B-2, and F-22. Ticket prices are $5 to hear author Suhler’s talk.
