Join Patriots Point in Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of D-Day

Chris Hauff May 29, 2014

The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is commemorating the special 70th anniversary of D-Day by hosting a symposium that will feature two guest speakers, one who was on board the USS LAFFEY the day of the attack, and an Army Ranger who landed on Omaha Beach.

The admission-free symposium will start at 7 p.m. on June 6th, inside the USS YORKTOWN’s Smokey Stover Theater.  Parking for the event will cost $5.

The USS LAFFEY, docked at Patriots Point, is one of only two D-Day warships still in existence.  There were more than 5,000 floating off the shore of German-occupied France the day of the attack.

“It’s an honor to have the USS LAFFEY at Patriot’s Point, and a great opportunity for people to come on board and meet veterans who served in one of the most important battles of U.S. history,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette.  “The D-Day symposium will be very inspirational and will serve as a reminder of the sacrifice these men made 70 years ago.”

The symposium will feature live entertainment and a living history production on the D-Day invasion and the breakout from Omaha Beach.

Do you charge for handicapped parking and how many spaces are available? I am a veteran of the Army, as are both of my brothers. My father was Navy… How early do you think I should be there to get a handicapped slot? I have been to Patriot’s Point for a cruise, but I knew I couldn’t navigate an Aircraft Carrier, so I’ve never really seen the Yorktown. One of my greatest honors was meeting John McCain and 2 other Medal of Honor recipients when I was working on his Presidential campaign… I actually was able to touch one,and I cried for all of the pain they had endured. My own father served in both Korea and Viet Nam. I was never in a war zone, but I joined during the Iran Crisis, and we were always on alert. I actually got my butt kicked in downtown Stuttgart when I came across a protest where they were burning our flag. I’m sorry for rambling on; it’s way past my bedtime but I just can’t walk very far, so I need to know how early to be there and hope for a blue space, as well as if I need to budget money for parking as I’m on disability and a VERY fixed income! I think my parents will be there, as well, so I will pass on any info you can give me. My mom is 76 and waiting on a hip transplant. My dad is 82.

      Hi Kathy,
We are only charging $5 per vehicle to park. You may want to arrive about 30 minutes to an hour early to ensure you get a handicapped spot. See you tonight!
