Nearly 500 Sailors Volunteer During Day of Caring at Patriots Point

Molly Hamilton Nov 19, 2014

On Friday, November 14, nearly 500 sailors from the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) came to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.  This special day is a time for local groups and organizations to volunteer in their communities at schools, government organizations and other sites in their local areas.

While the NPTU sailors were at Patriots Point, they completed a variety of tasks including clearing brush from the grounds surrounding the museum, power washing the island structure on the USS Yorktown, cleaning out trash and debris from compartments inside the ships, repairing railings across the ships, filling sandbags at the Vietnam Experience exhibit, and cleaning and polishing aircraft in the hangar bay of the USS Yorktown.  It was amazing to see how much work could be accomplished in such a short period of time.

The Day of Caring fits with the mission of the United Way to: “Improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.”  We greatly appreciated their help.  For more photos from the day, see below:
