Summer brings day campers to Patriots Point

Molly Hamilton Jul 27, 2015

Camps have been in full swing here this summer.  Between camps hosted by our Education Department and camps in the area that have brought their day campers here for a visit, hundreds—if not thousands—of children have explored the vessels of our museum this summer.

DSC07528Each of the past two weeks, 30 campers have come to a day camp with our Flight Academy offered through the Town of Mt. Pleasant.  They have learned the roles of pilots and air traffic controllers as well as tested their teamwork and communications skills in a variety of activities including drone obstacle courses, rock wall climbing and launching bottle rockets of their own design.

There were three sessions of day camps in the Flight Academy and two sessions of Summer Scientist camp through our Education Department.  All sessions were full and the campers seemed to enjoy their time at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum learning about science and history in fun and interesting ways in the unique setting of our museum.

The fun doesn’t have to end when the summer does either.  If you live in the Mount Pleasant area, there will be a five-week session each Thursday afternoon in October for children ages 10-16. This after-school program is deisnged to teach students the principles of light, leadership, communication and teamwork through the use of state-of-the-art flight simulators. Students will also learn how to perform the roles of air traffic controller, pilot, co-pilot and navigator while working together toward a final fully-immersive mission.

For more information on this exciting after-school program, check out page 13 of the latest Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation brochure at: https://www.tompsc.com/DocumentCenter/View/14757.
