Where Are Our Carriers?
Waring Hills Jan 25, 2011Where are our carriers? Long a question asked by our Presidents during times of crisis. Today we have eleven aircraft carrier battle groups and today around the world five are deployed. They are:
USS Enterprise (CVN 65) – Atlantic Ocean USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) – port visit Port Klang, Malaysia USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) – 5th Fleet USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) – Pacific Ocean USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) – Atlantic Ocean
For a comparison of aircraft carriers around the world, click here. The United Kingdom and France are planning additional large deck carriers for their fleets and it finally appears that the Chinese Navy will add aircraft carriers to her fleet.
In 1998 China bought from Ukraine the Varyag, a 67,500-ton Kuznetsov-class attack aircraft carrier about two-thirds complete. China’s first carrier could become operational in the near future, and will probably be used to learn the intricacies of carrier air operations.
