Youth Leadership Conference Underway at Patriots Point

Chris Hauff Jun 24, 2014

The 15th annual Military Order of the World Wars’ (MOWW) Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) is officially underway on the USS YORKTOWN.

The 75 participants are among the brightest in their class and are all rising juniors or seniors in the Southeast.  For the next four days some of the most highly acclaimed military and civilian leaders in the region will teach the group about the justice system, the American Flag, the Constitution and the United States military.

Guest speakersDSC01390 DSC01388 DSC01379 DSC01374 DSC01384 include: Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Gen. James Livingston, USMC (RET); Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon; Ninth Circuit Court Solicitor Scarlett Wilson; Navy Cross and Silver Star recipient Col. Myron Harrington, USMC (Ret); and The Citadel’s visiting Professor of Leadership & Ethics Col Douglas H. Fehrmann, USAF (Ret).

During the YLC, students will be required to write essays on the current turmoil in Iraq.  The winner of the contest will be given $100; second and third place will be each given $50.

The students will spend each night in the former officers’ quarters of the USS YORKTOWN.  On the last night (Friday) there will be a formal dance.

i attended the MOWW conference last year from clarkston high school and some of the cadets from my school would like to join your leadership conference in south Carolina

    1. Molly Hamilton says:

The MOWW conference is conducted by an outside group (the MOWW) and we are simply the location. To find out more information about the conference (which appears to be here at Patriots Point June 23-26), you should check out their website at: http://www.moww.org/http://www.patriotspoint.org/news_events/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=moderated#comments-formprograms/patriotic-education-program/

What attire would be appropriate for the formal dance? (military ball dress/prom dress)

    1. Molly Hamilton says:

Hi Kristen. It would be best to ask someone in charge at the Youth Leadership Conference this question. I am sure they would be able to help you. We at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum do not facilitate this conference, we are only the event location.

      Thank you!

      Kristen,

Here is the email address for the person in charge of the conference: [email protected]

      Thank you,
