Title
Fighting Squadron Twelve (VF-12) Christmas Insignia
Description
The Fighting Squadron Twelve (VF-12) insignia drawn on a sheet of paper and customized for Christmas. The paper reads 'A Very Merry Christmas from Fighting Squadron Twelve,' and shows a parrot dressed as Santa Clause brandishing a candy cane with Santa's sleigh in the background.
Context
This insignia is a twist on Fighting Squadron Twelve's usual logo of a pirate parrot designed by Walt Disney. The Walt Disney Company designed logos for US Military squadrons throughout World War II to boost morale among troops and aid the war effort.
Part of Carrier Air Group Twelve (CAG-12), Fighting Squadron Twelve (VF-12) was assigned to the USS Saratoga (CV-3) on August 1, 1943. Serving on and off the aircraft carrier through the Battle of the Treasury Islands and the Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaign, CAG-12 was transferred to the USS Randolph (CV-15) in January 1945 for the invasion of Iwo Jima.
