In 1975, the mighty USS Yorktown (CV-10) made her final voyage—arriving not for battle, but to begin a new mission as a museum and national landmark. Now, nearly five decades later, Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is preparing to celebrate a golden anniversary, and we want you to be part of the story.
As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2026, we’re launching a special community-driven project: Charting 50 Years. This effort invites everyone—locals, tourists, veterans, volunteers, and families—to share photographs, video footage, news clippings, and personal memories tied to Patriots Point.

Whether you were there when the Yorktown arrived in Charleston Harbor on June 15, 1975, visited on opening day in January 1976, or have memories from a more recent trip exploring the decks with loved ones, we want to hear from you.
Your contributions will help us build a special commemorative collection that will live both online and in a temporary exhibit opening January 2026. It’s your chance to be part of history—again.
“Patriots Point has fostered patriotism and pride for the United States, our military, and our veterans for more than 50 years. That is a milestone that should be celebrated together with the community and the millions of people who have walked in the steps of heroes aboard our historic ships,” said Executive Director Allison Hunt. “As we prepare for the 50th anniversary, we look forward to seeing all of the memories that were made while visiting the museum and learning about service and sacrifice.”
From now through August 31, you can submit your memories and materials through this form or email media@patriotspoint.org.

It’s hard to imagine that what started in 1973 as a bold vision to preserve naval history would become one of South Carolina’s most iconic destinations. Since opening to the public on January 3, 1976, millions of visitors have explored the decks of the Yorktown—walking the same paths as the sailors who once served aboard her in WWII, Vietnam, and beyond.
As we look to the future, we hope you’ll help us honor the past. Let’s celebrate 50 years together—one photo, one story, one memory at a time.
