Last summer, Westbrook Brewing Co. released a new brew in collaboration with the USS Yorktown Foundation. Shore Leave Lager, named after the cherished leisure times ashore while serving in the Pacific Theater, it pays homage to the sailors of the USS Yorktown and Laffey.
The Story Behind Shore Leave
In World War II, aircraft carriers were the floating cities of the U.S. Navy. Everything you needed to care for 3,000 men was aboard. Want a book? The library was open and ready. Ready to unwind with a show? Sailors screened movies in the hangar bay. Hungry after a long shift? The galley served four meals —or roughly 30,000 plates— each day!
What was missing, though, was time on dry land or a drink after a hard day. Those pleasures were only granted during shore leave, a guaranteed amount of time off the ship to rest and unwind. From luaus in Hawaii to impromptu beach parties at Leyte Gulf, the location didn’t matter once they could relax from the pressures of war.
