Patriots Point to Honor Victims of 9/11 with Special Remembrance Ceremony

Chris Hauff Sep 08, 2014

On Thursday, Sept. 11 at 8:45 a.m. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will hold a ceremony in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 men, women and children who were murdered 13 years ago in the tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

The free ceremony will include the singing of “God Bless America,” a moment of silence and a gun salute performed by the Joint Base Charleston Honor Guard. Members of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department will also lay a wreath at the base of the Patriots Point flag pole.

“We must always stop to remember what happened on a day when so many Americans lost their lives because of such incomprehensible acts of violence and hatred,” said Executive Director Mac Burdette. “In addition to the general public, we would also like to offer a special invitation to all Lowcountry first responders to join us in honoring their fallen brothers and sisters.”

Separate from the ceremony, which will take place landside of the museum’s historic warships, in front of the American flag, Patriots Point will also be offering a program on board the USS YORKTOWN. Visitors will be able to view a special video throughout the day, and cast a flower into Charleston Harbor in memory of those who were killed.

Admission and parking for the morning ceremony will be free. Afterwards, normal museum admission rates and parking fees will apply.
