Homeward Bound: The Warren Tucker Collection
After sweet-talking a transfer to the USS Yorktown in May 1944, Seaman 1/c Warren Vernon "Bill" Tucker was assigned to assist in the photo lab. Although he had no prior photography experience, Tucker discovered he had a talent for the work. Tasked with developing film from gun cameras and surveillance planes, Tucker became an integral member of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit aboard the carrier. He received a promotion to Photographers Mate 3/c in June 1945.
The Warren Tucker collection documents the USS Yorktown sailors on liberty in Japan after the September 2, 1945, surrender. After a short few weeks of exploration, the Yorktown sailed out of Tokyo Bay on October 1st. With a camera full of photos and memories, Tucker and the Yorktown were finally homeward bound.
