    In this outdoor program, you will explore various aspects of ecology by working in the field just like a scientist. This program features activities that tie-in to real ongoing regional science.

Charleston Excursions

The below activities can be selected as the program that is included in the camping cost. Off-site tours are subject to the companies’ tour schedule.

Tour of Fort Sumter

Length: 2 1/2 hours

To do: Campers take a scenic ride across Charleston Harbor to Fort Sumter National Monument. Campers get to explore the grounds where the Civil War began.

To see:

  • In-door Museum
  • Gift Shop

Departs: From Patriots Point

  • Saturdays at 8:15am from March – November
  • Saturdays at 10am from December – February


  • Due to scheduling, any group visiting Ft. Sumter will need to stay aboard the ship Friday night, with the tour on Saturday
  • This tour is not available to mid-week campers
  • Space is limited, and the designation of spaces assigned is first come, first served

Charleston Harbor Tour

Length: 1 1/2 hours

To do: Campers learn about Charleston’s fascinating history through a live narrative while cruising the gentle waves of her harbor.

To see:

  • Fort Sumter
  • Battery Point
  • Cooper River Bridge
  • Castle Pinckney

Departs: From Patriots Point

  • Every day at 3:15pm

  • Helicopter Tours

    Experience the awe-inspiring YORKTOWN from a completely unique perspective. Flights ranging from 5-20 minutes over Patriots Point, Charleston Harbor, and surrounding beaches provide breathtaking views from 600 feet.

  • Ship Shape Scavenger Hunts

    This 45 minute scavenger hunt will introduce you to many topics! All answers can be found throughout the YORKTOWN’s Hangar Deck, making this a perfect addition to your Patriots Point experience.

  • Flight Motion Simulator

    Come sit in a moving theater! This five-minute experience will give you the chance to become part of the action. The price for groups is $4 per person, or $5 for individuals.

  • Climbing Wall

    Our 34’ high climbing wall is a fun-filled challenge for adventure-seekers of all ages – and a great add-on activity for any group for just $5 per person.

  • Ship Store

    The Ship Store, the museum’s gift shop, offers a wide variety of Patriots Point, Ft. Sumter, and Charleston memorabilia. Now offering a 10% discount to all overnight campers (with wristband). It’s located landside of the USS YORKTOWN.

  • Audio Tours

    Rent your own personal audio player that will allow you to hear exclusive stories about the ship and her crew, including first-hand WWII Veteran accounts. There are more than 3 1/2 hours of content and 100 points of interest, and only plays what you want to hear.


Prices increase to $79 for a one night stay and $99 for a two night stay during Martin Luther King, Jr. and Presidents’ Day weekends.
