A Bold New Vision for the Legendary USS Yorktown

As Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, one of the most exciting transformations in our history is underway. A $5 million master plan will re-imagine the USS Yorktown, creating a more immersive and engaging experience for every visitor who steps aboard. 

Re-Imagining the Yorktown 

Guests will soon enter through a newly restored, air-conditioned Hangar Bay 1, greeted by the dramatic sight of a Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber suspended overhead. This revitalized space will serve as the new welcome center, setting the stage for an experience that allows guests to chart their own course through the ship. 

From there, each hangar bay will tell a distinct story. Hangar Bay 1 will serve as the orientation hub, complete with aircraft displays and guest services. Hangar Bay 2 will transport visitors back in time, restored to reflect the Yorktown’s days in active service with aircraft lined up for maintenance. Finally, Hangar Bay 3 will become the action zone, a lively gathering space offering simulators, refreshments, and flexible event space for community programs. 

With streamlined tour routes, enhanced signage, and newly opened areas, the Yorktown will offer both firsttime guests and returning visitors a fresh perspective on naval history.

Why It Matters

“The ship is our largest artifact,” says Executive Director, Allison Hunt. “When you’re here, you’re not just learning history—you’re living it.” The upgrades will preserve the authenticity of the Yorktown while adding innovative features designed to engage and inspire visitors of all ages.

What's Next 

Work on the Yorktown has already begun, with major changes planned for the coming year. At the same time, the Patriots Annex project will expand our waterfront into a vibrant destination with hotels, dining, and retail—all just steps away from our historic fleet. This is only the beginning.
