Former Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette Awarded “Order of the Palmetto”
Chris Hauff Sep 24, 2019Only a handful of people have been awarded the prestigious Order of the Palmetto by the sitting South Carolina Governor. Today, our own Former Executive Director Mac Burdette’s name was added to that list. Nominated by his peers, Burdette says he was surprised and humbled to learn he is the newest recipient of the award.

“It’ll take a while for me to grasp what it really means,” Burdette says.
The Order of the Palmetto Award is considered the highest civilian honor in the State of South Carolina. It was first awarded in 1971 by Governor John C. West. It recognizes a person’s lifetime achievements and contributions to the State of South Carolina.
The award comes in the form of a certificate or plaque that, in part, reads:
“In grateful recognition of your contributions and friendship to the State of South Carolina and her people. I do hereby confer unto you the Order of the Palmetto with all the rights and privileges appertaining thereto.”
Burdette served as executive director of Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum Executive from 2010-June 2019, retiring after nine years of accomplished ambitious projects.

During his time at the helm, museum attendance soared as part of his long-term business plan and he helped negotiate a 99-year lease to further the property. Burdette envisioned a 60-acre plot of land on the edge of Patriots Point as the provider of a much-needed revenue source to fund the restoration and maintenance of the museums aging warships.

Governor McMaster wasn’t able to present the award in person, but sent his congratulations through SC Rep. Lin Bennett.
When Burdette began his speech, he quickly touched on a few ideas for the museum he had up his sleeve. Many in the audience laughed, saying “See, he’s still working!”

“Whatever we do today or tomorrow is laid on an incredible foundation, that foundation is made up of hundreds of people who worked and volunteered here I am very lucky to have been placed in this time to help,” Burdette says. The former Exec. Director wanted everyone to know he is beyond humbled and was so blessed to work at such a place as Patriots Point.
